Concrete Slab: How to Ensure Proper Installation and Maintenance
Concrete slabs are essential in any foundation, building or construction project. When correctly installed and maintained, concrete slabs form a robust and reliable base that supports your entire structure. However, concrete slabs can cause significant structural problems when improperly installed or maintained.

To ensure you get the most value from your concrete slabs, follow these steps for proper installation and maintenance.
Preparation
When installing concrete, preparation is vital. Before placing your order for a concrete slab, measure carefully to know how much material you need for your job. Make sure to factor in any waste or errors that may also occur during installation. If your project requires hand tools or special equipment such as wheelbarrows or screed boards, be sure to have them on hand before beginning the work.
Installation
Once you've identified your needs and gathered the necessary supplies, it's time to start installing your concrete slab. Be sure to wear protective gear such as gloves when handling cement mix and heavy machinery; failure to do so can result in injury. Begin by creating a level surface where the slabs will rest on. This can be accomplished by shovelling dirt or gravel into low areas and compacting it with a tamper until it's even with surrounding areas.
Now that you have a level base ready for the slab installation, position and secure forms – metal frames – around its perimeter using stakes in each corner and along the sides of the slab area from which the slab will span. Once everything is firmly secured, fill in around each stake with a soil/gravel combination for added stability if desired. Assemble reinforcing rod (re-rod) pieces within the Forms if needed, then pour in wet cement mixture at a rate of two inches per hour until complete voids are filled evenly throughout both corners of frame area(s). Allow mixture at least 24 hours to cure before moving on to the following steps below.
Finishing Touches
After allowing sufficient time for curing, take a float trowel and smooth out any bumps or ridges left over after the initial curing period. This process should be done lightly but enough that noticeable bumps and gaps are gone leaving behind a flat surface. Also, not too much pressure wants to be used as doing this could reduce the stability of the slab by causing small weak spots throughout the structure. After completing the smoothing process, begin brushing the surface with a stiff-bristled brush giving extra attention to corners and top edges, paying mind not to cause riffs while brushing. Once all is brushed, use hose water to lightly wash away the remaining dust from troweling. Brush joint lines accordingly using a groover tool with a ¼" depth cut underneath the steel piece, then a sharp blade running opposite direction cut a clean joint line groove into the wet cement mixture. Lastly, make sure sealant application is made correctly according to the following product specifications sealing will help protect against future damage caused by external elements such as freeze/thaw cycles, sunlight etc.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance is as essential as proper installation regarding griping value from your concrete slabs since they cannot repair themselves. Often repairs must be done outside sources like professional contractors etc. However, many issues can be prevented through regular inspections every few months checking mortar joints and sealant surfaces, ensuring there're no visible signs of degrading cracks, spalls settling, etc. If anything appears suspicious, contact a professional immediately. Don't forget minimal maintenance, including cleaning and washing the surface, freeing debris, weed growth, etc. This helps preserve longevity, integrity and the overall look and feel of structure built upon these foundations.
Overall if taken seriously rules mentioned above are followed correctly, installing concrete slags becomes an easily manageable task ensuring the best possible outcome project is completed without unforeseen problems arising down the line due to improper planning.
